Little House on the Prairie

As we celebrated Valentine's Day this month, we were reminded of the hilarious situations that arose from Nellie and Laura’s competing efforts to attract Almanzo’s attention. The Cinnamon Chicken scene from “Back to School Part 2” (Season 6, Episode 2) is consistently a fan favorite. See the funny video showing how Laura’s secret ingredient ruined Nellie and Almanzo’s first date. Want to try the recipe for yourself, but with the right ingredients? Click here to see our Little House on the Prairie Cinnamon Chicken recipe!

In the book On the Banks of Plum Creek, Ma showed Laura and Mary how to make a row of paper stars to decorate their home. They hung this lovely papercraft over the edges of the shelves, so the light would shine through them. Now you can enjoy making this craft in your own home with items you probably already have on hand. See how to make beautiful paper star garlands as the Ingalls did, as well as a heart-shaped variation.

While Laura and Mary made their paper stars, Ma made delicious vanity cakes. These special treats are so light and fluffy with nothing inside that it’s no wonder they’re called vanity cakes. If you’re hosting a get-together, vanity cakes are a perfect sweet to serve. You can enjoy them alone or topped with blueberry sauce.

In the Little House book series, Laura Ingalls Wilder depicts her husband, Almanzo, as handsome, courageous, chivalrous, and talented. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we’re remembering their special courtship, which was described in These Happy Golden Years and depicted in Season 6 of the “Little House on the Prairie” TV series.

This year we have an array of Little House on the Prairie inspired gifts to showcase your love for Little House on the Praire! You’ll find note cards, greeting cards, mugs, drinking glasses, and more. These items make a sweet gift for the Little House on the Prairie fans in your life!

February is the birth month of both Laura Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo Wilder. This highly-rated film brings the Little House book series to life through photography, interviews, paintings, and an original score.

This month we also celebrate the birthdays of Karen Grassle, who played “Ma”, and Charlotte Stewart, who portrayed “Miss Beadle” in the original TV series. Try throwing a Little House on the Prairie-style birthday party or a Laura Ingalls Wilder party to celebrate the various February birthdays!

Another way to celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday this month is to go beyond the famed “Little House on the Prairie” show and learn more about her life through books that provide further insight. Cozy up with The World of Laura Ingalls WilderCaroline Ingalls - What Laura Left Unsaid, Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Laura Ingalls Wilder and Me: A Prairie Girl’s Faith, and you might be surprised what you learn!
