Little House on the Prairie

As we celebrated Valentine's Day this month, we were reminded of the hilarious situations that arose from Nellie and Laura’s competing efforts to attract Almanzo’s attention. The Cinnamon Chicken scene from “Back to School Part 2” (Season 6, Episode 2) is consistently a fan favorite. See the funny video showing how Laura’s secret ingredient ruined Nellie and Almanzo’s first date. Want to try the recipe for yourself, but with the right ingredients? Click here to see our Little House on the Prairie Cinnamon Chicken recipe!

In the book On the Banks of Plum Creek, Ma showed Laura and Mary how to make a row of paper stars to decorate their home. They hung this lovely papercraft over the edges of the shelves, so the light would shine through them. Now you can enjoy making this craft in your own home with items you probably already have on hand. See how to make beautiful paper star garlands as the Ingalls did, as well as a heart-shaped variation.

While Laura and Mary made their paper stars, Ma made delicious vanity cakes. These special treats are so light and fluffy with nothing inside that it’s no wonder they’re called vanity cakes. If you’re hosting a get-together, vanity cakes are a perfect sweet to serve. You can enjoy them alone or topped with blueberry sauce.

In the Little House book series, Laura Ingalls Wilder depicts her husband, Almanzo, as handsome, courageous, chivalrous, and talented. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we’re remembering their special courtship, which was described in These Happy Golden Years and depicted in Season 6 of the “Little House on the Prairie” TV series.

This year we have an array of Little House on the Prairie inspired gifts to showcase your love for Little House on the Praire! You’ll find note cards, greeting cards, mugs, drinking glasses, and more. These items make a sweet gift for the Little House on the Prairie fans in your life!

February is the birth month of both Laura Ingalls Wilder and Almanzo Wilder. To celebrate, start by learning more about Laura’s life and legacy in this one-hour documentary, Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder. This highly-rated film brings the Little House book series to life through photography, interviews, paintings, and an original score.

This month we also celebrate the birthdays of Karen Grassle, who played “Ma”, and Charlotte Stewart, who portrayed “Miss Beadle” in the original TV series. Try throwing a Little House on the Prairie-style birthday party or a Laura Ingalls Wilder party to celebrate the various February birthdays!

Another way to celebrate Laura Ingalls Wilder’s birthday this month is to go beyond the famed “Little House on the Prairie” show and learn more about her life through books that provide further insight. Cozy up with The World of Laura Ingalls WilderCaroline Ingalls - What Laura Left Unsaid, Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Laura Ingalls Wilder and Me: A Prairie Girl’s Faith, and you might be surprised what you learn!

Laura Ingalls Wilder, who didn’t like to sit and make fine stitches as a young girl, became very good at her handicrafts later in life. She made beautiful quilts, lovely buttonholes for a job in town, and handicrafts to earn money to help send Mary to the Iowa College for the Blind.  Sewing was part of her life and is a lovely tradition that we are celebrating this month with a colorful and delicate hoop project. Learn how to stitch your own beautiful hand embroidery with this tutorial.

There’s something fun and adventurous about a covered wagon that sparks a child’s imagination. With a real fabric roof and turning wheels, kids will love to make this recycled covered wagon for their Little House on the Prairie® Wooden Peg Dolls. As a bonus, you can incorporate education into this homemade craft and discuss what it would have been like to travel in a wagon, the supplies that were needed, and the potential challenges you would have encountered.

Children and adults alike continue to be fascinated by the engaging tales of the Ingalls family during the pioneer era and the skills they learned to survive in harsh conditions. In a time before central heating, when a warm home in the winter might only be 55 degrees, quilting was a vital activity. Quilts were not only used for bedding but were also hung in windows and doorways to block drafts. Today, we continue to appreciate quilts for so many reasons. Learn to make your own with this Mix & Match: Inspired Scrappy Quilting tutorial.

In Laura’s day, household items and personal care products were fashioned carefully and lovingly by hand, using everyday items that were grown, gathered, or foraged in the wilderness. For instance, we all remember Laura’s love of Miss Beadle’s Lemon Verbena perfume in the TV show. This Do-It-Yourself project is a simple and fun way to create your own unique twist on the Lemon Verbena home goods of that time.

When Laura, Mary, Carrie, Ma, and Pa still lived in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, they traveled by sled through the woods to Grandma and Grandpa’s house where they gathered maple sap to make brown maple sugar. Though less common today, families still participate in this activity during the sugaring off season from February to May. We don’t all need to carry buckets full of sap through the woods though to enjoy delicious maple sugar candy at home. This recipe walks you through the process of making your own maple sugar candy, starting with store-bought maple syrup.

March is National Women’s History Month, and naturally, we think of Laura Ingalls Wilder and all she accomplished in her life. Today, she is remembered as an iconic American figure and a literary legend. But did you know that her daughter played an important role in editing her books? In the history of literature, there’s nothing quite like the relationship between Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane. From the beginning, the books were the outgrowth of a unique mother-daughter, writer-editor team.
